A fresh political storm is brewing in Bungoma County as Moses Wetangula faces mounting pressure over his strategy ahead of the 2027 General Election. The National Assembly Speaker is reportedly working to reassert his influence in the region after recent political setbacks that have raised questions about his grip on the county.
Wetangula’s influence appeared to weaken following a bruising defeat in the Chwele–Kabuchai ward by-election, where his preferred candidate, Vincent Maunda, lost to independent candidate Eric Wekesa.
Wekesa’s victory, widely linked to support from Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and other local leaders, signaled shifting political dynamics in Bungoma.
In what analysts view as a strategic comeback attempt, Wetangula recently hosted a group of teachers from Bungoma County at his residence for a consultative meeting.

The gathering is being interpreted as part of broader efforts to rebuild grassroots support and reposition himself as the region’s key political figure.
However, his plans have now encountered unexpected resistance from within allied ranks. Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa has openly urged Wetangula to dissolve his Ford Kenya party and join the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
According to Barasa, Ford Kenya has lost its political relevance and can no longer command significant influence nationally.
Barasa pointed to the precedent set by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, whose Amani National Congress (ANC) party folded to join UDA, arguing that a similar move would secure Wetangula’s political future.
The remarks have sparked debate within Western Kenya, with supporters divided on whether Wetangula should maintain Ford Kenya’s independence or align fully with UDA.
As the 2027 election approaches, the unfolding developments highlight growing tensions and realignments that could significantly reshape Bungoma’s political landscape.
