NAIROBI, Kenya — Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has set social media ablaze and ignited fresh political debate after offering a rare, sarcastic word of congratulations to President William Ruto. This marks the first time Gachagua has commended his former boss since his high-profile removal from office.
Gachagua was ousted from office after both the National Assembly and the Senate voted to impeach him over allegations of insubordination, ethnic discrimination, and undermining the presidency.
Since his unceremonious exit, the former Deputy President has maintained a relentless offensive against the Kenya Kwanza administration, holding frequent press briefings to critique government policy and point out leadership shortcomings.

However, speaking during a recent media address, Gachagua delivered a commentary that quickly went viral online. In a video circulating across social media platforms, the former Deputy President claimed that despite what he described as ongoing governance failures, President Ruto had successfully delivered on one key political promise.
Gachagua stated that President Ruto’s single biggest achievement was ensuring that the late former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, went back to his home in Bondo permanently, referencing campaign-era promises.
“In all fairness, I must give credit where it is due,” Gachagua remarked during the briefing. “President Ruto promised that he would take Raila Odinga to Bondo permanently, and he actually achieved that.”
The statement has triggered mixed reactions across the country. Allies of the Kenya Kwanza administration dismissed the remarks as a bitter attempt to regain public attention, while political commentators noted that the incident highlights the increasingly unpredictable dynamic between former political allies in Kenya.
