Malala Urges Orengo to Drop 2027 Presidential Bid in Favour of Edwin Sifuna
Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) deputy leader Cleophas Malala has called on Siaya Governor James Orengo to abandon his presidential ambitions and throw his weight behind Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Malala made the remarks in response to Orengo’s formal declaration of intent to run for the country’s top seat. The Siaya governor announced his bid on Friday, August 28, during an address at a funeral service in Homa Bay County.
Malala Cites Luhya Loyalty to Raila
Invoking the Western Kenya region’s history of unconditional political support for the late Raila Odinga, Malala argued that it was now time for the political establishment to rally behind a Luhya candidate.
“Whenever Raila came here, we voted for him as a community. Now, the spotlight is on our young man, Edwin Sifuna,” Malala stated.

He urged Orengo not to disrupt what he described as a clear path for Sifuna to fly the party’s presidential flag. “Do not stand in Edwin Sifuna’s way. Do not cause confusion,” he said, cautioning the veteran politician against portraying himself as an agent of division within the opposition setup.
Gachagua Backs Sifuna
Malala disclosed that DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua had personally assured him of his backing for Sifuna’s bid and tasked him with conveying the endorsement publicly.
“My party leader has assured me and asked me to reiterate this message—that he is ready to work with and support Sifuna to become the president of Kenya,” Malala declared.
Directing a pointed message at Orengo, Malala asked him to step aside gracefully as an elder and lend his backing to Sifuna instead. He further called on the Nairobi Senator to prioritise consolidating his home turf in the Western region to secure maximum leverage on the national negotiating table.
