Cooperatives Cabinet Secretary Honorable Wycliffe Oparanya landed in political hot water following a dramatic Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) meeting held in Kakamega on January 18, 2025.
The meeting, convened at Linda Grounds by an ODM faction allied to Oburu Odinga, sought to gather residents’ views on a possible collaboration between ODM and the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ahead of the 2027 General Election.
However, the event took a sharp turn when Kisii County Governor His Excellency Simba Arati publicly scolded Oparanya, accusing him of undermining party unity and causing confusion within ODM.

Arati faulted the former Kakamega Governor for allegedly holding a parallel party engagement at a time when ODM party leader Oburu Odinga was already in Kakamega for official party activities.
In a video that has since gone viral, Arati warned Oparanya against what he termed as “double speak” and urged him to align with the party’s broader strategy.
He further stated that Oparanya should work closely with Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa to help deliver a second term for President William Ruto, cautioning that failure to do so could cost him future reappointment in government.
The incident has exposed growing cracks within ODM, with competing factions sending mixed signals to supporters, leaving the party’s 2027 strategy increasingly uncertain.
