The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) held a crucial meeting in Mombasa on Tuesday morning, but notable absences raised eyebrows within the party ranks.
The NEC, chaired by ODM Party Leader Oburu Oginga, convened to discuss key party strategies, upcoming electoral preparations, and the ongoing restructuring of the party’s leadership hierarchy.
While other senior leaders were present, the absence of Sifuna and Osotsi was keenly noticed, prompting murmurs among party insiders about potential friction at the top echelons of the party.
Party sources indicate that the meeting’s agenda included reviewing regional leadership positions, streamlining party operations ahead of the general elections, and evaluating the performance of sitting MPs and senators allied with ODM.
The absence of top officials such as Sifuna and Osotsi could signal disagreements over policy direction or candidate endorsements, especially as the party seeks to consolidate its influence across key counties.
Some political commentators suggest that these absences may also reflect underlying tensions between the party’s operational leadership and its political strategists.

“It’s unusual for the Secretary General and Deputy Party Leader to miss such a pivotal NEC meeting without a formal explanation.
This raises questions about the unity and decision making process within ODM,” said Dr. Jane Wanjiku, a political analyst at Nairobi Policy Institute.
Despite the speculation, ODM leadership has remained tight-lipped on the reasons behind the absences, with a spokesperson merely stating that the meeting proceeded as scheduled and that all necessary decisions were made to keep the party on track.
Observers say that with the general elections approaching, every move within ODM is likely to be scrutinized and the absence of senior leaders at strategic meetings may trigger political maneuvering both inside and outside the party.
The political community will be watching closely to see whether Sifuna and Osotsi issue statements or make appearances in subsequent party gatherings.
As ODM navigates internal dynamics, the NEC meeting in Mombasa underscores the delicate balancing act party leaders must perform to maintain cohesion while preparing for a politically charged year.
