Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has finally broken his silence over claims that he is a political project of former President Uhuru Kenyatta ahead of the anticipated 2027 General Election.
Speaking during a recent interview on a local television station shortly after declaring his interest in vying for the presidency, Dr. Matiang’i dismissed the allegations as unfounded and politically motivated.
The claims have been circulating widely, with some analysts suggesting that his candidacy is being influenced by the retired Head of State, who they argue could still wield power behind the scenes if Matiang’i ascends to office.
However, Matiang’i firmly rejected the narrative, insisting that his decision to run for the country’s top seat is purely personal and guided by his desire to serve Kenyans.

He emphasized that he has built his career on professionalism, accountability, and dedication to public service, not political patronage.
“I am not anyone’s project,” Matiang’i stated during the interview. “My focus is on offering leadership that prioritizes the needs of the people and strengthens our institutions.”
The former CS, who served prominently in Uhuru’s administration, acknowledged their working relationship but clarified that it does not translate into political control or influence over his ambitions.
Political observers note that Matiang’i’s entry into the race could significantly reshape the 2027 contest, attracting both support and scrutiny from different quarters. His strong stance appears aimed at reassuring voters who may be concerned about external influence in leadership.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, Matiang’i’s remarks signal an attempt to position himself as an independent candidate focused on reform and national development, distancing himself from the growing perception that he is tied to past regimes.
