Jury Convicts Former Gang Leader Duane ‘Keffe D’ Davis in 1996 Tupac Shakur Murder
LAS VEGAS — A Nevada jury has found 63-year-old former gang leader Duane “Keffe D” Davis guilty of first-degree murder for his role in the September 1996 drive-by shooting of rap icon Tupac Shakur. The verdict delivers the first criminal conviction in a high-profile case that remained officially unsolved for nearly three decades.
Following roughly three hours of deliberation, the 16-member jury returned the guilty verdict. Davis now faces a potential sentence of life imprisonment without parole. His formal sentencing has been scheduled for October 13, though he immediately signaled his intent to appeal.
Prosecutors portrayed Davis as the “on-site commander” who organized the attack after Shakur and his entourage beat Davis’ nephew, Orlando Anderson, in the lobby of the MGM Grand hotel earlier that evening. Under Nevada law, an individual can be convicted of first-degree murder for aiding, abetting, or supplying the weapon used in a homicide, even if they did not personally pull the trigger.

The state’s case relied heavily on Davis’ own public admissions, including media interviews and details published in his 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend. In the book, Davis placed himself inside the white Cadillac from which the deadly shots were fired and acknowledged providing the .40-caliber firearm used in the ambush.
The defense argued that Davis’ self-incriminating accounts were fabricated exaggerations intended to generate book sales and publicity. They emphasized that no physical evidence, DNA, or surveillance footage directly tied him to the crime scene.
Shakur was 25 years old when he was struck four times in a car driven by Death Row Records founder Marion “Suge” Knight. The rapper succumbed to his injuries six days later.
