Video: Village Elders Turn Against Ruto Over Unfulfilled KSh 3,000 Monthly Stipend Promise
NAIROBI, Kenya — President William Ruto is facing mounting pressure from village elders after a section of their representatives called a press conference to accuse his administration of abandoning the financial promises made to them at State House.
A video obtained by the press shows an outspoken elders’ representative detailing growing frustration among the grassroots administrators.
According to the spokesperson, the promised payments were disbursed for only two months, excluding a significant portion of the country’s village elders.
The third disbursement failed to arrive, and the government has reportedly offered no explanation or official communication regarding the sudden freeze.

The rift comes just weeks after President Ruto hosted over 10,000 village elders at State House, Nairobi.
During the high-profile gathering, the Head of State praised the elders as the crucial “engine” of his administration, tasking them with defending government policies, boosting security, and driving grassroots development across Kenya’s 47 counties.
To honor their historical service, President Ruto announced a KSh 3,000 monthly token of appreciation alongside promises of smartphones and Social Health Authority (SHA) medical coverage.
The initiative was framed as a long-overdue gesture to formally integrate 106,000 village elders into the National Government Administration structure.
However, goodwill has rapidly evaporated. Addressing journalists, the elders’ representative expressed bitter disappointment, stating that community leaders feel used and neglected now that the publicity around the State House visit has faded.
They demanded that the President immediately honor his word, clear the pending arrears, and establish a transparent payout mechanism.
The political fallout poses a fresh headache for the Executive, as village elders wield significant influence in local decision-making and public sentiment—making their public revolt a critical blow to the government’s grassroots support base.
