NAIROBI, Kenya — Renowned gospel musician Rachel Wandeto has passed away at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) while undergoing emergency treatment, hours after being victims of a horrific assault in Nairobi’s Kasarani Mwiki area.
The tragic news of her demise was broken by Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai and subsequently confirmed by fellow gospel singer Karangu Muraya, who had been actively coordinating assistance and monitoring her medical status.
According to preliminary police reports, Wandeto was walking to a friend’s residence when she was intercepted by three masked assailants.
The men cornered her and aggressively demanded money, claiming she had received financial compensation from President William Ruto for her vocal political stance. When Wandeto stated she had no such funds, the attackers doused her in petrol and set her ablaze before fleeing the scene.

Political Motives Suspected
The brutal attack comes just months after Wandeto gained widespread attention across social media platforms for tattooing President William Ruto’s face on her body alongside slogans advocating for his second term.
The highly publicized expression of political alignment reportedly caused severe domestic strain, leading to the dissolution of her ten-year marriage after her husband left over differing political ideologies.
National Outrage and Investigations
Prior to her death, the incident had provoked immense public outrage and calls for swift justice. On Sunday, Karangu Muraya mobilized a blood donation drive to support Wandeto before she underwent surgery for severe, full-body burns.
High-ranking government officials, including Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, visited the singer at KNH to pledge state coverage of her medical expenses and guarantee a thorough investigation.
Following the confirmation of her passing, social media platforms have been flooded with tributes and condemnation of the hate-fueled political violence. Police authorities have confirmed that active investigations to apprehend the suspects are ongoing.
