OL KALOU, KENYA – In a major political shift ahead of the July 16 by-election, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and his Democratic Citizens Party (DCP) team have suffered a significant setback after a key leader defected to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Paul Karanja, who finished third in the recent DCP party nominations, has officially dumped the party to join UDA.
Announcing his exit, Karanja declared his full support for UDA flagbearer Samuel Muchina Nyagah, dealing a heavy blow to DCP’s ambitions to capture the parliamentary seat.
The Ol Kalou constituency seat fell vacant following the untimely demise of the late Member of Parliament, Hon. David Kiaraho, who passed away in late March.
Speaking on his decision, Karanja stated that Nyagah is the most competent leader to complete the development blueprint initiated by the late legislator.

“Hon. Muchina Samuel Nyagah is best suited to kumalizia kazi iliyoanzishwa na the late Hon. Kiaraho, having served as the Constituency Manager for Ol Kalou,” Karanja remarked.
Continuity and Institutional Memory
Karanja highlighted that Nyagah’s tenure as constituency manager gives him a unique advantage, including crucial institutional memory and deep knowledge of all ongoing local projects. This experience is deemed critical given the limited time remaining before the next general election.
Furthermore, Karanja noted that because the remaining constituency budget for this electoral cycle is nearly finalized—with Nyagah having directly submitted the office input in his managerial capacity—it is practical to give him the opportunity to implement it.
“Having said that, I declare my full support to my brother and friend Mr. Muchina and assure you of my vote during the forthcoming by-elections. Kazi ni kazi,” Karanja concluded.
