KISII, KENYA – Political tensions within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) flared up openly in Kisii County during the burial of Mama Teresa Nyaboke, mother to Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka.
The “Linda Ground” faction of the party, which is closely linked to Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Odinga, encountered a highly hostile reception from the gathered mourners.
What was meant to be a solemn send-off quickly transformed into a political litmus test for the fractured opposition party.
Trouble began when leaders aligned with the Linda Ground initiative rose to speak. Every attempt to market or praise the faction was met with thunderous heckling and jeering from the crowd.
The hostile reception forced several speakers to cut their speeches short and resume their seats almost immediately.

Nominated MP Irine Mayaka faced the brunt of the crowd’s anger. Despite making a generous pledge of nearly Sh20,000 toward a local education program—a gesture that would typically win over a crowd—her speech took a disastrous turn the moment she mentioned the Linda Ground initiative.
The mention sparked instant uproar, drowning out her voice and forcing her to hand back the microphone.
In stark contrast, ODM Secretary General and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna was accorded a hero’s welcome.
Mourners and local leaders cheered Sifuna warmly, urging him to feel completely at home in Kisii. Speakers at the event assured Sifuna of his safety, declaring that no political goons would be allowed to disrupt him.
They promised to swiftly silence anyone who attempted to heckle or attack the vocal Nairobi senator.
The dramatic events in Kisii clearly highlight the deep ideological fractures currently rocking the ODM party, signaling a tough battle ahead for the Linda Ground faction in the Gusii region.
