Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has issued a direct challenge to his fellow principals in the United Opposition, calling on leaders like Kalonzo Musyoka and Fred Matiang’i to publicly prove their loyalty to the coalition ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Hon Gachagua knows the unity of the opposition will be the key to ensure that President Dr William Samoei Arap Ruto is not Re-elected.
Addressing Kenyans in the diaspora in Dallas, Texas, the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader openly questioned the reliability of certain coalition partners, urging them to declare unconditionally that they will support whichever candidate is ultimately chosen to face President William Ruto.
Gachagua emphasized that a genuine commitment to unseating the current administration requires absolute unity, regardless of who secures the presidential ticket.
Pledging his own readiness to step aside and back any selected flagbearer, he voiced growing concern over rhetoric coming from various political camps.
He criticized supporters who suggest that their leaders should align with President Ruto or abandon the alliance if they fail to secure the nomination, describing such stances as dangerous and counterproductive to the opposition’s goals.
The former Deputy President cautioned that ambiguous loyalty threatens to fracture the coalition before the campaign even gains full momentum.
He urged opposition principals to give clear, public assurances to their bases to prevent political defections and maintain momentum.
Drawing on historical political patterns, Gachagua predicted that while the coalition will eventually settle on a single candidate who will command massive countrywide support, at least one prominent figure might abandon the cause along the way.
Gachagua’s remarks highlight mounting internal tensions within the United Opposition as key figures maneuver for the top ticket. By demanding public pledges, Gachagua aims to seal potential exits and ensure the alliance presents an undivided front in 2027.
