Trouble for Ruto as Mt. Kenya Ally Betty Maina Threatens to Quit UDA
NAIROBI, KENYA — President William Ruto is facing a fresh political headache within his United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party after Murang’a County Woman Representative, Betty Maina, threatened to defect. The staunch Mt. Kenya ally issued the ultimatum following a viral video where she fiercely called out UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar over remarks deemed derogatory to the Kikuyu community.
The brewing storm follows controversial statements made by Omar, who appeared to accuse the Mt. Kenya region of sabotaging infrastructure and working against President Ruto’s administration.
The remarks triggered widespread condemnation, with leaders accusing the party’s top organ of tribal profiling.

Speaking at a public event in Murang’a, a visibly agitated Maina took center stage to defend her electorate. She warned that she would lead a mass exit from the ruling party if the Secretary General continued targeting the region.
“The Kikuyu community voted overwhelmingly for President Ruto in 2022, but we are not stupid to sit back and be abused,” Maina stated, referencing the region’s historic rejection of the late Raila Odinga in favor of the current President.
The threat exposes deep-seated vulnerabilities in Ruto’s political bedrock ahead of the 2027 general election. The Mt. Kenya region voted heavily as a bloc for the Kenya Kwanza administration, and any fracture could severely damage the President’s reelection bid.
Although Hassan Omar issued a public apology on Sunday—claiming his words were taken out of context regarding Coastal land issues—the political damage appears deep.
As pressure mounts from key political figures demanding decisive action from State House, political analysts warn that failing to tame ethnic baiting within UDA could trigger a mass rebellion from the vote-rich mountain region.
