Kenyans are mourning the tragic demise of gospel artist Rachel Wandeto, who passed away on Monday morning, May 18, 2026, while receiving treatment at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).
Wandeto succumbed to severe injuries after being brutally attacked by unknown individuals in the Mwiki area of Kasarani, Nairobi.
Before her tragic death, a heartbreaking video emerged of Wandeto speaking from her hospital bed, detailing the horrific ordeal.
According to her statement, she was walking home along Obama Road shortly after midnight when she was confronted by three masked men.
The assailants allegedly accosted her and demanded money, claiming she had received large sums of cash from the Kenya Kwanza administration to distribute to the public.

Despite her desperate denials that she had any such funds, the assailants proceeded to douse her with a flammable substance and set her ablaze.
The late artist had recently gone viral across social media platforms after tattooing President William Ruto’s face on her chest, alongside a “Two Terms” campaign message.
Her family revealed that the attackers explicitly targeted her over the tattoo and her vocal political stance.
Wandeto sustained approximately 70 percent burns covering her torso, face, and limbs. Following the assault, she was rushed to Uzima Uhai Hospital before being transferred to KNH for specialized care, where public figures and government officials visited her.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation across the country, raising serious concerns over rising political intolerance.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja have both condemned the barbaric act, confirming that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched a high-speed probe to track down the killers and bring them to justice.
