NYERI, Kenya — Nyeri County Governor Mutahi Kahiga has launched a scathing attack on United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary General Senator Hassan Omar, demanding his immediate resignation over remarks allegedly profiling the Kikuyu community.
In a fierce political standoff, Kahiga labeled Omar a “great liability” to the ruling party and the nation. The Governor accused the Secretary General of attempting to demonize an entire community to divert attention from his past political record.
“People like you, Hassan Omar, our appointed UDA Secretary General, are a great liability to the party, to Kenyans, and to all people of goodwill,” Governor Kahiga stated. “When you try to demonize an entire community just because you think Kenyans have forgotten your role in the ICC matters, it is a tragedy.”
The dispute has revived past political ghosts, with Kahiga linking Omar’s current conduct to a previous controversy where Kahiga himself faced intense backlash over purported remarks regarding Azimio leader Raila Odinga.

Reminding Omar of accountability, the Nyeri County boss pointed out that he previously took full responsibility for his own missteps by stepping down from a prestigious, elected leadership position. He challenged Omar to match that standard of political responsibility.
“You were on record bashing me for my purported remarks on Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga’s death,” Kahiga added.
“I took responsibility for both the intended and perceived meanings and resigned as Vice Chairman of the Council of Governors, a position I had earned through an election, not an appointment! I now challenge you to do the same! Resign from your appointed position of UDA Secretary General!”
The escalating war of words exposes widening rifts within the ruling UDA party, highlighting deep-seated ethnic and regional tensions as leaders clash over accountability and community respect. Omar has yet to officially respond to the Governor’s resignation demands.
