Former Presidential Advisor Moses Kuria has finally responded to criticism from former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua regarding his controversial appearance at a recent Akorino event held at State House Nairobi.
Kuria sparked public debate after attending the function dressed in full Akorino regalia, despite not being a member of the Akorino faith.
The event, hosted by President William Ruto, was meant to celebrate and recognize members of the Akorino community. However, Kuria’s attire drew mixed reactions, with some questioning the authenticity and seriousness of the event.
Among those who voiced concern was Gachagua, who criticized the gathering and alleged that the individuals present were not genuine members of the Akorino sect.
His remarks added fuel to an already heated public discussion, with some leaders calling for respect towards religious traditions.

In his response, Kuria dismissed the criticism, maintaining that his actions were taken in good faith. He explained that he had been invited to the event by friends from the Akorino community and chose to dress in their traditional attire as a sign of solidarity and respect.
Kuria likened his decision to the common practice where non-Muslims wear kanzus during Idd celebrations to honor the occasion.
“I was simply appreciating the culture and faith of my friends who invited me,” Kuria stated, insisting that there was no ill intent behind his choice of clothing.
The incident has since sparked wider conversations about cultural sensitivity, religious identity, and the boundaries of symbolic participation in faith-based events.
As political leaders continue to weigh in, the debate highlights the delicate balance between inclusivity and respect for religious traditions in Kenya’s diverse society.
