SIAYA, Kenya — A political storm is brewing in Siaya County following the dramatic entry of former Governor Cornel Rasanga into the 2027 senatorial race, setting up a titanic battle against the incumbent, Dr. Oburu Odinga.
The political waters were stirred a few days ago when Dr. Oburu, who is also currently serving as the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader, publicly declared his intention to defend his senatorial seat.
Speaking to the public, Oburu sought to clarify his political future, stating definitively that despite holding the high-profile position of national party leader, he would not be mounting a presidential bid. Instead, his focus remains firmly on retaining his legislative grip on Siaya.
However, Oburu’s path to re-election has run into immediate trouble. Former Governor Cornel Rasanga has thrown down the gauntlet, vowing to fiercely challenge the incumbent and “send Oburu home” come 2027.

Rasanga, who served as Siaya’s pioneer governor for two terms, announced his bid with a clear message: he is fully prepared to take on the political veteran.
“I am ready to challenge the incumbent senator,” Rasanga declared, signaling a fierce battle ahead for the ODM ticket.
This showdown presents a unique headache for the region’s dominant party. With Oburu holding the reins of ODM leadership and Rasanga commanding a formidable grassroots network from his ten years as governor, political analysts predict a high-stakes nomination process.
The ground in Siaya is rapidly shifting as local factions begin aligning themselves behind the two heavyweights. For Dr. Oburu Odinga, what was expected to be a straightforward reelection campaign has fast transformed into a battle for political survival, as Rasanga’s entry guarantees that the 2027 Siaya senatorial race will be one of the most hotly contested matches in the region’s history.
