MUSCATINE, Iowa — A small community in eastern Iowa is in shock after a 52-year-old local resident shot six of his family members before turning the gun on himself early Monday.
The suspect, identified by police as Ryan Willis McFarland of Muscatine, opened fire across multiple locations in the city.
Muscatine Police Chief Anthony Kies confirmed that officers were initially dispatched to a local residence, where they discovered four victims fatally shot.
A subsequent search for the gunman led police to a city trail, where they spotted and confronted McFarland. “While talking to Ryan Willis McFarland, he took his own life,” Chief Kies stated during a press conference, noting that the suspect died at the scene.

Following the confrontation, the investigation took a grimmer turn as authorities uncovered two additional male victims elsewhere in Muscatine, both believed to be related to McFarland. One man was found dead inside his home, while the other was discovered at a local business.
The identity of the victims has been withheld pending formal identification and notification of extended family. While Chief Kies acknowledged that McFarland had a prior criminal record, he declined to share specific details regarding his past or a potential motive for the rampage.
The Muscatine Police Department, alongside major crimes investigators, is currently working to process the three distinct crime scenes and conduct interviews with neighbors and acquaintances.
“Today I simply do not have the words, this act of evil and what it has done to our community,” Chief Kies said, describing the collective grief hanging over the town. Police have urged anyone with relevant information to contact their major crimes unit immediately.
