Orange Democratic Party (ODM) Secretary General and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has broken his silence after images and videos emerged showing him in the company of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and leaders allied to the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).

The unexpected appearance sparked intense debate among Kenyans, coming at a time when ODM is grappling with internal ward-level political wrangles ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Sifuna was spotted on January 3, 2026, in Makomboki, Murang’a County, an area perceived to be a stronghold of Gachagua’s political influence.

His presence alongside leaders perceived to be opposed to ODM immediately fueled speculation that the vocal ODM firebrand could be warming up to Gachagua’s camp amid growing tensions within his party.

However, the ODM Secretary General moved quickly to dismiss the political interpretations surrounding his visit. In a statement shared on his social media platforms, Sifuna clarified that his trip to Murang’a had nothing to do with political realignments or negotiations.

He emphasized that he was in the county purely to stand in solidarity with his colleague, Embakasi South Member of Parliament James Gakuya, who was laying his mother, Alice Wangari Gakuya, to rest.

“Happening in Makomboki, Murang’a County, to condole with our brother Hon. James Gakuya, MP Embakasi South, as he lays his mother Alice Wangari Gakuya to rest,” Sifuna stated, firmly distancing himself from any political symbolism attached to the gathering.

His clarification appears to have put to rest growing claims that he could be considering a political exit from ODM or plotting a move to Gachagua’s camp should internal party tensions escalate.

Sifuna reiterated that moments of grief should not be politicized, urging Kenyans to respect the sanctity of funerals and human solidarity beyond party lines.

The incident nonetheless highlights the heightened political sensitivity in the country as leaders’ movements continue to be closely scrutinized in the run-up to 2027.
