PPDT Overturns Edwin Sifuna’s Ouster as ODM Secretary-General
NAIROBI, Kenya — Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has secured a major political lifeline after the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT) invalidated his removal as the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary-General.
The tribunal’s ruling on Thursday brings temporary reprieve to Sifuna, coming just 24 hours after he was unceremoniously dropped from the influential Senate Energy Committee, which is chaired by Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga.
Sifuna’s removal from the committee on Wednesday had signaled a deepening rift within the opposition party, leaving him without reassignment.
However, the PPDT delivered a crucial counterweight to his recent political woes.
The tribunal ruled that ODM’s National Executive Committee (NEC) had violated Sifuna’s constitutional right to a fair hearing during the internal process to depose him. Consequently, the tribunal confirmed Sifuna as the duly recognized Secretary-General of the party.
The decision halts—at least for now—the planned transition of power within the party’s secretariat. Honorable Catherine Omanyo, who had been designated as the acting Secretary-General following the initial ouster, will now have to wait a little longer before taking charge of the orange party’s operations.

While the verdict marks a definitive win for Sifuna, it does not guarantee permanent immunity. In its balanced ruling, the PPDT granted the ODM party the green light to commence fresh disciplinary proceedings against the vocal Nairobi Senator.
The tribunal specified that any future attempts to remove Sifuna must strictly align with the provisions of the party’s internal constitution and the wider regulatory frameworks governing political organizations in the country.
With internal factions within ODM intensifying, the tribunal’s decision resets the legal and political chessboard, guaranteeing that the battle for control of the key political seat is far from over.
