“History Will Remember You”: Gachagua Hails ‘Heroic’ MPs Who Voted Against Finance Bill
NAIROBI, Kenya — Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has broke his silence following the passage of the controversial Finance Bill 2026, praising the legislators who voted against the tax proposals as the “true heroes of our Nation.”
Gachagua had previously been on record urging members of Parliament to reject the bill in totality, arguing that it was structurally designed to burden Kenyans with an oppressive wave of new taxes.
However, his efforts to see the bill shot down fell short during Thursday’s high-stakes legislative session.
Only 40 Members of Parliament voted “NO” to reject the bill, while a majority of 122 members voted in favor, allowing the bill to successfully sail through the National Assembly.
Taking to his official Facebook page shortly after the vote, Gachagua expressed his deep gratitude to the minority who stood their ground, while sharply criticizing those who supported the executive’s fiscal plans.
“History will remember the 40 Honorable Members of the National Assembly who on Thursday 18th June 2026 stood with the people of Kenya,” Gachagua posted. “You are the true heroes of our Nation who chose the 55 Million Kenyans against the oppressive 2026/27 finance bill.”

The former Deputy President emphasized that voting against the bill was the only true representation of the citizens’ mandate.
Looking ahead to the next general election, he added, “I trust your constituents will show you kindness next year on the 10th of August.”
In contrast, Gachagua took a swipe at lawmakers who voted “YES” or chose to skip the crucial session entirely, suggesting they chose political rewards over the welfare of ordinary citizens. “I am sure Mr. William Ruto is very happy with you and shall reward you handsomely,” he noted sarcastically.
Closing his statement on a spiritual note, Gachagua urged Kenyans to remember the names of the 40 lawmakers, highlighting that “40 is one of the most symbolic and significant numbers in the Holy Bible and Qur’an.”
