Malala Sets Record Straight on Meeting with CS Oparanya, Denies Government Return Plan
NAIROBI, KENYA — Former United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary-General and current Democracy for Citizens (DCP) Deputy Party Leader, Cleophas Malala, has strongly dismissed online speculation suggesting he is planning a return to the government.
The political rumor mill went into overdrive following a high-profile meeting between Malala and Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives and MSMEs Development, Wycliffe Oparanya.
Given Malala’s recent shift to the opposition alongside his party leadership, critics and political analysts rushed to speculate that the firebrand politician was negotiating a path back into President William Ruto’s administration.
Taking to his official social media platforms to clear the air, Malala explicitly denied these claims, asserting that the sit-down was purely developmental and centered around their shared home county of Kakamega.

He noted that political differences should not hinder leaders from consulting on regional progress.
“Honorable Wycliffe Oparanya left an indelible mark on Kakamega County during his tenure as Governor,” Malala stated. “I paid him a courtesy call today to tap into his wealth of wisdom and experience.”

According to the DCP deputy leader, the discussions focused strictly on critical socio-economic challenges affecting Kakamega County. Malala highlighted Oparanya’s two-term experience as the county’s pioneer governor as an invaluable resource for structuring future development agendas.
The meeting comes at a time when Malala has heavily intensified his political engagements in Western Kenya ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Despite sharing a podium with a senior Cabinet Secretary from the Kenya Kwanza administration, Malala has reassured his supporters that his political stance remains unchanged and that consulting an experienced predecessor is standard statesmanship rather than a political defection.
