Political Shockwaves: Cleophas Malala’s Meeting with CS Oparanya Sparks Decamping Rumors
NAIROBI, KENYA – A surprise courtesy call has ignited intense political speculation across the country after former Kakamega Senator and heavy-hitting Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) member, Cleophas Malala, held a private meeting with Cooperatives and MSMEs Cabinet Secretary, Wycliffe Oparanya.
The high-profile sit-down has sparked mixed reactions online, with shocked Kenyans on social media questioning whether Malala is planning a major political shift.
Focus on Development and Unity
According to official communications from CS Oparanya’s office, the discussions centered on the progress and economic potential of the newly launched Shirikiana SACCO.
The financial initiative was officially unveiled by President William Ruto during his recent development tour of the Western region, aiming to deepen financial inclusion and unlock affordable credit for ordinary citizens.

Beyond regional development, the two leaders reportedly exchanged views on national cohesion and the elusive political unity of the “Mulembe nation”—a critical voting bloc in Western Kenya.
“Constructive engagement and collaboration among leaders remain essential in advancing the interests of our people and strengthening national cohesion,” CS Oparanya noted regarding the engagement.
Netizens React
Despite the development-focused agenda, the meeting has caused a storm online. Malala, an influential figure allied with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s DCP faction, has historically been a fierce rival of Oparanya.
The unexpected camaraderie has left netizens divided, with many analyzing the move ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial race:
- Speculation of a Shift: A section of Kenyans believe Malala is softening his stance toward the broad-based Kenya Kwanza administration to secure a smoother path for his political future.
- A “Mulembe” Truce: Others view the meeting as a mature gesture toward regional development, putting aside party politics for the sake of economic growth in Western Kenya.
Neither leader has confirmed any political realignment, but the meeting has undoubtedly reshaped the political conversation in the region.
