KISUMU, KENYA – In a surprising turn of political events, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) veteran leader and Siaya Senator, Dr. Oburu Oginga, faced a hostile reception in Kisumu County after local youth disrupted a funeral service, chanting anti-incumbency slogans.
The incident, captured in a video that has since gone viral on social media, occurred during the burial service of the late mother to Nyando Member of Parliament, Jared Okello.
Tension escalated when Dr. Oburu stood to address the congregation, only for a section of agitated youths to drown out his speech with relentless heckling and loud chants of “One term!”
As the situation threatened to spin out of control, the presiding bishop stepped in. Taking the microphone, the cleric made a passionate plea to calm the chaotic crowd, steering the tense moment toward a message of reconciliation.

Turning to the political leaders present, the bishop offered a profound perspective on the youth’s rebellion.
He noted that the heckling was not merely an act of disrespect, but rather a symptoms of a deeper crisis, representing a raw, unedited message of suffering, economic hardship, and a desperate agitation for a better quality of life.
The clergyman urged the present political class, led by Senator Oburu, to treat the day’s disruptions as a wake-up call.
He challenged them to use the encounter for sober reflection, urging the leaders to shift their focus away from endless political posturing and instead prioritize the implementation of sound, citizen-centered policies that will make Kenya a better and more equitable place for the younger generation.
The incident highlights a growing wave of political restlessness among youth in the Nyanza region, signalling a shifting political landscape where leaders can no longer take traditional stronghold loyalty for granted.
