Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has intensified his political critique of the government following the official groundbreaking of the massive multi-billion-dollar Dangote refinery project in Lamu.
The confrontation escalated after President William Ruto publicly dismissed demands for full access to the investment pact and accused opposition lawmakers of attempting to derail economic progress.
In response to the executive’s stance, Sifuna grounded his position strictly on constitutional governance, framing the dispute as a battle for accountability and public participation in grand national projects.
The row centers on the level of transparency surrounding high-value state agreements made with foreign investors. Sifuna underscored that full access to information regarding state dealings remains a clear mandate established under Article 35 of the Constitution.
In his view, releasing crucial details on major infrastructure frameworks, land allocations, and financial commitments is a mandatory governance practice designed to protect public interest, rather than a privilege granted at the discretion of the executive branch.
He rejected attempts to shield state arrangements from public scrutiny or parliamentary review.
Taking a firm political line against the current administration’s leadership style, Sifuna criticized the practice of finalizing major national economic pacts behind closed doors.
He emphasized that governance through non-transparent, personal negotiations undermines national institutions and deprives citizens of their constitutional right to oversee state resources.
Pledging a complete shift in administrative strategy, Sifuna maintained that the political opposition intends to dismantle secretive decision-making models once the present government is removed from power.
According to the Senator, establishing robust public disclosure and restoring complete adherence to constitutional governance remain essential prerequisites for restoring public trust and safeguarding the rule of law across the nation.
