Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has clarified remarks he recently made about the admission of Grade 10 students, following public backlash and intense debate across the country.
A video of Gachagua criticizing the posting of students to schools outside their regions had gone viral, with many Kenyans interpreting his comments as discriminatory.
A few days ago, Gachagua raised alarm over what he termed as the “punishment” of Mount Kenya students through placement in distant day schools, despite the region having invested heavily in quality learning institutions.
His remarks sparked mixed reactions, with critics accusing him of promoting regional exclusion in education.

However, while speaking during a funeral ceremony in Ukambani, the former Deputy President moved to clarify his position.
Gachagua insisted that his statement was misunderstood, saying he never opposed students from other regions being admitted to schools in Mount Kenya.
According to him, his argument was centered on fairness and transparency in the placement process.
He explained that regions such as North Eastern have worked hard to develop schools, allowing learners from across the country to be posted there, and the same principle should apply nationwide.
Gachagua emphasized that his call was for equitable admissions and accountability, not regional segregation. The clarification has reignited debate on the new education transition system and regional balance in school placements.
