Chaos in Nakuru: Bus Torched as Rival Political Factions Clash at Empowerment Event
NAKURU, KENYA — Chaotic scenes unfolded in Nyota, Kuresoi North on Thursday, June 18, 2026, after a public empowerment forum degenerated into violent clashes between rival political factions, culminating in the torching of a passenger bus.
The event, which was attended by Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika and several of her political allies, turned into a battlefield when supporters of the Governor clashed with those of Kuresoi North Member of Parliament (MP) Alfred Mutai.
According to eyewitnesses, tensions had been simmering from the onset of the development meeting.
The situation rapidly escalated when the two camps began chanting opposing political slogans. The verbal altercation quickly turned physical, with attendees throwing plastic chairs and projectiles, forcing local leaders and residents to flee for safety.

Amidst the melee, a bus that had been used to ferry attendees to the venue was set ablaze by angry youths. Videos circulating widely online showed the vehicle engulfed in thick black smoke as panicked residents scattered.
Anti-riot police officers deployed to the scene used teargas to disperse the warring factions and restore order. Several individuals reportedly sustained injuries during the stampede and confrontation and were rushed to local health facilities for medical attention.
The National Police Service has confirmed that a rigorous investigation is underway to determine the precise trigger of the violence and to track down the individuals who instigated the unrest and destruction of property.
Local leaders from across the political divide have strongly condemned the incident, urging residents to exercise political tolerance. They emphasized that public empowerment forums are meant to uplift communities rather than serve as flashpoints for political animosity.
