Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka is facing renewed political pressure in Ukambani following a high-profile defection that could shake his influence in the region ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Former State House Chief of Staff Nzioka Waita has officially ditched the Wiper Democratic Movement and joined the ruling United Democratic Alliance.
Waita cited frustrations within Wiper, accusing Kalonzo’s inner circle of sidelining him in the race for the Machakos gubernatorial seat.
According to Waita, the party had allegedly predetermined its preferred candidate, effectively locking him out despite his interest in contesting.
He criticized the party structure, describing it as restrictive and dominated by a few individuals who control key decisions.

The development presents a fresh challenge for Kalonzo, who recently declared his intention to run for president against William Ruto in 2027.
Political observers note that unity in Ukambani is crucial for Kalonzo’s national ambitions, making such defections a serious concern.
Waita’s move is also seen as a strategic gain for UDA as it continues efforts to expand its footprint in opposition strongholds. His entry into the ruling party could influence local political alignments in Machakos and the wider Ukambani region.
With the political landscape beginning to shift, Kalonzo is now under pressure to address internal dissatisfaction within Wiper and strengthen his support base.
The unfolding situation is expected to play a key role in shaping the region’s political direction as the next election draws closer.
