Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has stirred fresh political debate after alleging that the current administration is frustrating retired President Uhuru Kenyatta by withholding some of his entitled benefits.
Speaking at the Jubilee Party headquarters in Nairobi, Matiang’i claimed that the situation surrounding the former Head of State has been deteriorating in recent months.
According to him, Uhuru Kenyatta is not receiving the full privileges accorded to retired presidents under Kenyan law, a move he described as both unfortunate and troubling.
Matiang’i suggested that despite the alleged challenges, Uhuru has chosen to remain silent on the matter.
He attributed this to the former president’s reserved nature, noting that he has opted not to publicly confront the government.

However, Matiang’i warned that the issue raises serious concerns about how the state treats its former leaders.
He further argued that such actions could set a worrying precedent, potentially undermining the dignity of the presidency.
The former CS emphasized that benefits for retired presidents are not favors, but constitutional entitlements meant to ensure their security and well-being after leaving office.
Matiang’i also linked the matter to broader governance concerns, stating that citizens may begin to lose confidence in institutions if leaders are seen to be treated unfairly.
He criticized what he termed as political hostility, urging the government to uphold respect and fairness regardless of political differences.
The remarks have since sparked mixed reactions across the political divide, with some leaders backing Matiang’i’s claims while others dismissing them as politically motivated.
As of now, there has been no official response from the government regarding the allegations. Similarly, Uhuru Kenyatta has not publicly commented on the claims.
The unfolding developments continue to attract national attention, adding a new dimension to Kenya’s evolving political landscape.
