Teachers Turn Heat on Aden Duale Over SHA Crisis as Discontent Grows
Teachers across the country have intensified pressure on Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale over the struggling Social Health Authority (SHA), just days after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua warned them of looming challenges with the scheme.
The growing unrest comes amid complaints that the SHA system is failing to deliver essential healthcare services to its members.
Speaking from Nandi County, a section of teachers expressed frustration, claiming they are still unable to access treatment in hospitals despite government assurances that the system had been streamlined.
This follows recent remarks by Gachagua, who cautioned teachers that they would soon “cry” over the inefficiencies of SHA. He urged them to boycott the scheme, arguing that it was not functioning as intended and would disadvantage many contributors.

His sentiments appear to have resonated, with teachers now openly voicing dissatisfaction and demanding immediate intervention.
According to the affected teachers, hospitals continue to deny them services under SHA, citing unresolved technical and administrative issues. This is despite Duale’s earlier directive on the removal of tariffs and efforts to improve service delivery under the scheme.
“We are paying into a system that is not helping us when we need it most,” said one teacher from Nandi. “We cannot continue like this.”
The educators have now threatened to stage protests if their grievances are not addressed promptly. They are calling on the Ministry of Health to fix the system and ensure that all registered members can access medical care without unnecessary hurdles.
The unfolding standoff puts Duale under increasing scrutiny, as pressure mounts on the government to restore confidence in the SHA and guarantee reliable healthcare access for Kenyan workers.
