Aisha Jumwa Lands in Trouble with Kaya Elders Days After Ditching Ruto’s UDA Party

KILIFI, KENYA — Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Honorable Aisha Jumwa has run into unexpected political headwinds in her home county of Kilifi, just days after announcing her high-profile exit from President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.

Addressing the media at her Kakuyuni residence in Malindi, Jumwa publicly declared that she was severing ties with the ruling party to chart her own political path ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Citing internal frustrations and a lack of support for her Kilifi gubernatorial ambitions, the former Cabinet Secretary emphasized that her painful decision followed deep reflection and consultation with her core supporters.

However, her political realignments have sparked strong resistance from influential traditional leaders in the region.

Speaking to members of the press in Kilifi, a council of local Kaya Elders openly criticized the move, accusing the politician of acting unilaterally without engaging local traditional institutions.

According to the council representatives, Jumwa did not consult the traditional custodians of the region before taking such a major political step.

The elders maintained that her decision is entirely personal and does not carry the endorsement of the local community.

“She is not representing Kilifi County in this move, and her political decision does not affect or represent anyone but herself,” one elder stated during the briefing. “We were not consulted, and as community leaders, we will not rubber-stamp individual political decisions that are not aligned with the broader interests of our people.”

The pushback from the Kaya Elders adds a fresh layer of complexity to Jumwa’s prospective gubernatorial bid.

As political realignments intensify along the Coast, all eyes remain on the veteran politician to see which political party she will choose next to anchor her campaign.
