IPOA Takes Over Investigation into Boda Boda Rider’s Death at Muthaiga Police Station

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has officially taken over the investigation into the controversial death of 19-year-old Erick Otieno following his detention at Muthaiga Police Station.

The National Police Service (NPS) confirmed the transition on Wednesday. NPS Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga stated that while the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) initially launched inquiries upon receiving reports of the death, the oversight body has now stepped in to ensure an independent investigation.

“Upon receiving the report of his passing, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations promptly initiated inquiries to establish the full circumstances surrounding this tragic incident. The investigations have now been taken over by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority,” Muchiri stated.

Timeline and Key Allegations

The case has ignited intense public outcry and renewed calls for police accountability in Nairobi. While the family directly blames the arresting officers for his death, police authorities have yet to issue a detailed statement directly addressing the assault allegations. IPOA’s findings are expected to determine whether criminal charges will be recommended against the officers involved.
