Kenyans Told Who Holds ODM Party Certificate Amid Internal Political Wrangles
A fresh twist has emerged in the ongoing leadership wrangles within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), as Kenyans are finally being told who legally holds the party’s official certificate.
The battle for control of ODM has intensified in recent weeks, with factions within the party taking opposing positions over its political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election.
One group allied to party leader Oburu Odinga has been pushing for closer cooperation with the ruling administration under the Kenya Kwanza coalition.
The faction argues that aligning with the government is a strategic move to secure political power.
On the other hand, a rival faction led by the party’s Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has called for caution, urging members to maintain the party’s independence.

Sifuna’s allies have openly opposed the broad-based government arrangement, insisting that ODM should remain firm in its opposition role as the country heads toward the next elections.
Amid the confusion and rising tensions, the question of who holds the party’s official registration certificate has been a subject of heated debate.
Speaking during an interview on a local radio station, Siaya Governor James Orengo clarified the matter, stating that the ODM constitution clearly designates the Secretary General as the legal custodian of the party’s certificate.
Orengo emphasized that Sifuna is the rightful holder of the document, dismissing claims by other individuals as unlawful. He warned that anyone purporting to possess the certificate outside the established constitutional framework is acting against the law.
His remarks are expected to further fuel the internal contest, even as party members continue to grapple with divisions that could shape ODM’s future political standing.
