IEBC Delivers Shocker to Pre-2012 Voters Ahead of 2027 Polls
Kenyans who registered as voters before 2012 have been dealt a major surprise after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announced that they will be required to register afresh.
The revelation comes as the commission intensifies a nationwide voter registration drive in preparation for the 2027 General Election.
Citizens across the country have been urged to take advantage of the ongoing exercise to secure their participation in the upcoming polls.
However, in a statement that has sparked widespread concern, IEBC disclosed that its current voter database primarily contains records from 2012 onwards.
According to the commission’s chairman, Ethekon, only individuals who registered after 2012 or those who later updated their biometric details are fully captured in the system.
This means that a significant number of Kenyans who initially registered before 2012 but never updated their biometric data may not appear in the current register. As a result, they have now been directed to undergo fresh registration to regularize their status.

The announcement has triggered questions among citizens, many of whom are puzzled about how elections have been conducted over the years if earlier records were incomplete or missing. Concerns have also been raised about the credibility and management of voter data over time.
Political analysts warn that the directive could have far-reaching implications if not handled carefully, especially with the country gearing up for a crucial election cycle. They have called on the IEBC to provide clear communication and ensure the process is transparent and accessible to all eligible voters.
As the registration exercise continues, Kenyans are now being encouraged to verify their voter status early and comply with the new requirements to avoid last-minute inconveniences ahead of the 2027 polls.
