Siaya County Governor James Orengo has dismissed claims that he was chased away from a burial ceremony in Seme, clarifying the circumstances that led to his early departure.
Speaking after the incident that sparked widespread debate online, Orengo stated that reports suggesting he was forced out by hostile youths were inaccurate.
The burial, which was held in honor of the father of Seme Member of Parliament James Nyikal, had drawn several political leaders and mourners from across the region.
“Contrary to the misreporting by Citizen TV, we did not leave the venue because we were ‘chased,’” Orengo explained.
“We departed because the presiding Bishop and Seme MP had already left to proceed with the burial. Our sole purpose for attending was to offer our condolences and stand in solidarity with the family.”

Earlier reports had linked his departure to alleged tensions involving supporters aligned to Oburu Odinga and factions within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), including the so-called “Linda Mwananchi” group. However, Orengo maintained that his exit was orderly and respectful.
He further revealed that his tight schedule also influenced his decision to leave promptly. After departing Seme, the governor traveled to Kisumu International Airport and later proceeded to Nairobi in preparation for the upcoming EALASCA Festival set to take place in Mombasa beginning May 4, 2026.
Orengo noted that Siaya County will participate in the regional event, where he will serve as Patron of the Kenya Inter-Counties Sports and Cultural Association (KICOSCA).
He also praised the warm reception he received from locals at the airport, highlighting what he described as Kisumu’s spirit of hospitality.
The governor’s clarification comes amid heightened political tensions, with leaders seeking to manage public perception and maintain unity within their respective factions.
