Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has stirred public discussion after carefully sidestepping the heated “one-term versus two-term” debate during President William Ruto’s recent development tour in the county.

Kang’ata, who hosted the Head of State in Murang’a as part of the ongoing Mt Kenya region visits, was among leaders welcoming the President and rallying residents to support national development initiatives.

The tour is widely seen as a strategic engagement with a region that overwhelmingly backed Ruto in the 2022 General Election.

However, it was Kang’ata’s remarks during a public address that caught the attention of many. At a time when political leaders across the country are increasingly engaging in early succession debates, the governor appeared keen to distance himself from the conversation.

In a video that has since circulated online, Kang’ata declined to be drawn into the “one-term or two-term” narrative surrounding President Ruto’s tenure.

Instead, he emphasized his commitment to service delivery, stating that his primary focus is working with the national government to improve the lives of Murang’a residents.

He highlighted key priorities including better healthcare services, improved infrastructure, and access to essential amenities. According to the governor, political debates should not overshadow the urgent needs of wananchi.

“I am focused on collaborating with the government of the day so that our people can benefit,” Kang’ata said, adding that development, not politics, should take center stage.

His remarks have sparked mixed reactions among Kenyans, with some praising his development-first approach while others interpret his stance as a strategic avoidance of a politically sensitive topic.

As the national political climate gradually heats up, Kang’ata’s position reflects a cautious approach by some leaders who prefer to prioritize governance over early campaign rhetoric.
