Newly appointed Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Honorable Catherine Omanyo faced a tough public reception during a political gathering in Malava after a section of residents started walking out on her immediately as she took the microphone to speak.
The Busia Woman Representative, who recently assumed party responsibilities following the ouster of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, was attempting to address the crowd when a visible wave of discontent swept through the audience.

Nabii Nabwera Steps In
Observing the escalating exodus, Lugari Member of Parliament Honorable Nabii Nabwera intervened in an attempt to restore order. Nabwera took to the microphone to appeal to the crowd’s patience, pleading with residents to allow the party leadership to address them.
“Let us show respect and accord our party leaders an audience as they bring their message to Malava,” Nabwera urged the retreating crowd.
While the intervention managed to temporarily quiet the venue and persuade some attendees to pause, a noticeable portion of the crowd continued to exit, leaving the meeting partially deserted.
A Steep Climb Following Sifuna’s Exit
The chaotic incident highlights the ongoing hurdles Omanyo faces in stepping into the high-profile position previously held by Edwin Sifuna. Sifuna’s charismatic and aggressive grassroots style made him a dominant figure within ODM, leaving high expectations for any successor.
Political analysts note that retaining grassroots enthusiasm in Western Kenya remains a critical challenge for the revamped party leadership as political factions recalibrate ahead of upcoming political engagements.
