BUNGOMA, Kenya — A political storm is brewing in the Western region following a high-octane rally in Bungoma County, dealing a significant blow to National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula’s influence in his political backyard.
The massive show of force, led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna alongside Siaya Governor James Orengo, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, packed Bungoma’s Postal Grounds. The overwhelming turnout served as a clear signal that the political dynamics of the region are rapidly shifting.
Adding to Wetangula’s woes, a video surfaced online showing Kakamega County Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) openly dismissing recent calls by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Speaker Wetangula.
The two veteran leaders had urged Sifuna to tone down his aggressive politics and wait for President William Ruto to complete a potential two-term tenure up to 2032 before the Western region pushes for the presidency.

However, the local leaders rejected this proposition. The MCAs argued that both Wetangula and Mudavadi have dominated Western politics for decades with unfulfilled promises of taking a shot at the nation’s top job, only to step aside when election cycles peak.
“Wetangula has been promising to run for the presidency for years but has repeatedly failed to even get his name on the ballot,” the leaders declared, insisting that the region can no longer afford to play second fiddle.
The MCAs rallied behind Senator Sifuna, urging the veteran duo to step aside and support the younger generation of leaders to unify the Western vote.
With opposition figures gaining traction across Bungoma and Kakamega, political analysts suggest Speaker Wetangula must move swiftly to shore up his local base or risk losing his long-held status as the political kingpin of the region.
