Ameir married Samia Suluhu Hassan in 1978, well before her historic rise in Tanzanian politics. Together, the couple raised four children. Among them is Wanu Hafidh Ameir, who followed her mother’s path into public service and currently serves as a Member of the Zanzibar House of Representatives.
History as Tanzania’s First “First Gentleman”
When President Samia Suluhu Hassan assumed office in March 2021 following the death of former President John Magufuli, Ameir made history as Tanzania’s first-ever First Gentleman.
Despite his unique, historic position in the state house, Ameir maintained a exceptionally low profile throughout his wife’s presidency. Known to be private and media-shy, he deliberately chose to stay out of the political spotlight, rarely appearing at official state functions or campaign events, save for major historic milestones. His understated demeanor earned him widespread respect across Tanzania as a steady, grounded figure behind the nation’s head of state.
State Funeral Arrangements
Following the announcement of his death, political leaders, international diplomats, and citizens from across the region extended condolences to President Samia Suluhu Hassan and her family. Government authorities in Dodoma and Zanzibar are coordinating formal state funeral arrangements in accordance with national protocols and Islamic burial traditions.
