Gachagua Fires Salvos at Kalonzo, Matiang’i in Live Meru Interview
MERU, KENYA — Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has sent political shockwaves through the opposition coalition following a fiery live broadcast interview with Meru radio stations.
The interview came directly on the heels of a series of successful political rallies in Meru County, where Gachagua sought to counter calls by Cabinet Secretary Ruku and allies advocating for Mount Kenya East to separate politically from Mount Kenya West.
Pushing for regional unity, Gachagua dismissed the division agenda before turning his attention to key opposition heavyweights.
During the broadcast, Gachagua heaped praise on the Linda Mwananchi movement, particularly celebrating the relentless grassroot mobilization championed by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.
However, the tone quickly shifted as Gachagua fired direct salvos at Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.

According to Gachagua, the opposition needs to pull its weight if it hopes to mount a formidable challenge against the current administration.
He noted that if Matiang’i and Kalonzo match the energy, passion, and visible legwork that he and Sifuna are putting into the ground, President William Ruto would face an uphill task attempting to mobilize counter-offensives.
“If Kalonzo and Matiang’i start putting in real effort like Sifuna and I are doing, Ruto will have a very hard time countering us,” Gachagua emphasized during the session.
The candid comments have ignited widespread debate across the political spectrum. Observers and political analysts are questioning whether Gachagua’s sentiments were a subtle wake-up call or a harsh public rebuke labeling his fellow opposition leaders as lazy.
