Sifuna Reveals Mama Ida’s Failed Intervention to Prevent ODM Split
NAIROBI, Kenya — Embattled Senator Edwin Sifuna has broken his silence regarding the deepening fissures within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), revealing a high-stakes, behind-the-scenes attempt by Mama Ida Odinga to broker peace before the party fractured.
Speaking during an emotional interview on a local radio station, Sifuna detailed how Mama Ida, the widow of the late party patriarch Raila Odinga, stepped in to prevent the movement from splitting into the rival “Linda Mwananchi” and “Linda Ground” factions.
The Meeting at the Odinga Residence
Sifuna disclosed that as tensions reached a breaking point, Mama Ida summoned the party’s top brass to her home. According to the Senator, the former First Lady urged the leadership to prioritize unity and dialogue to honor the legacy of the late “Baba.”

“Mama Ida advised us to sit down, talk through our differences, and remember the vision that built this party,” Sifuna stated. “She was a voice of reason when things were falling apart.”
A Failed Resolution at Bosire’s Home
Following Mama Ida’s intervention, a follow-up meeting was convened at the home of a party official identified as Bosire. Despite the optimism surrounding these talks, the reconciliation efforts ultimately collapsed. Sifuna revealed that immediately after the session, the party’s internal organs moved to finalize his ouster.
The Rise of Catherine Omanyo
The split became official when the party declared Busia Woman Representative Catherine Omanyo as the Acting Secretary General, effectively ending Sifuna’s tenure at the helm of the party’s secretariat.
Sifuna noted that with the “Linda Ground” faction seizing control of the formal party structures, he and his supporters were left with “no option” but to forge ahead with the Linda Mwananchi initiative.
The revelation highlights the volatility of the post-Raila era as different wings of the party battle for the soul of Kenya’s oldest opposition movement.
