Sifuna Claims Ruto Gov’t Is Punishing Him for ‘Linda Mwananchi’ Stand
NAIROBI, Kenya — In a revealing interview with a local radio station, Nairobi Senator and embattled ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has detailed the personal and political toll of his refusal to align with the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Sifuna claims the government is systematically “punishing” him and his kin for his leadership of the Linda Mwananchi Initiative, a grassroots movement critical of President William Ruto’s policies.
Family Caught in the Crossfire
Sifuna disclosed that the consequences of his firm political stance have moved beyond the halls of Parliament and into his family home. The Senator alleged that his brothers are being denied employment opportunities specifically because of his activism.
“My own brothers are suffering. They are being denied letters of employment while the kin of my colleagues who have defected to support the Kenya Kwanza administration are receiving them with ease,” Sifuna stated.
The Senator further revealed that the pressure has hit a breaking point within his family. He shared that his mother recently approached him with a stern warning, expressing fear that his hardline opposition is “sabotaging” the future of his own people.

According to Sifuna, she urged him to reconsider his position to save his relatives from further state-sponsored marginalization.
Rift Within ODM
The allegations come amid deepening cracks within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). While a faction of the party has leaned toward a “broad-based” cooperation with President Ruto, Sifuna has remained a vocal critic, spearheading rallies that highlight the high cost of living and governance failures.
Sifuna pointedly claimed that recruitment into the civil service—specifically the issuance of Teacher Service Commission (TSC) employment letters—is being used as a political carrot. He alleged that leaders allied with the President are handed these opportunities as rewards, while those in the “Linda Mwananchi” camp are blacklisted.
Despite the personal cost and family pleas, Sifuna maintained that he would not be intimidated into silence, insisting that his mandate remains with the “common mwananchi” who continues to struggle under the current regime.
