Sifuna: The Two-Horse Race is the Only Way to Topple Ruto in 2027
NAIROBI, Kenya — In a move that has sent ripples through the political landscape, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General, Senator Edwin Sifuna, has laid out a blunt roadmap for the 2027 general elections. During a recent high-profile interview, the outspoken Senator declared that the only viable strategy to defeat President William Ruto is to collapse the field into a “two-horse race.”
No Room for Compromise
Sifuna, often seen as the firebrand of the opposition, used the platform to dispel any rumors of a potential alliance with the current administration.
Despite recent murmurs of “government of national unity” or back-channel negotiations, Sifuna’s stance remains ironclad. He insisted that ODM is not interested in working with the Kenya Kwanza regime, framing the 2027 contest as a definitive battle for the country’s soul.
The Strategy: Two Names on the Ballot
The core of Sifuna’s argument rests on mathematical simplicity and voter focus. He claimed that a crowded field of candidates only serves to dilute the opposition’s strength and confuse the electorate.

“The only way to remove Ruto from office is by making sure that the ballot has only two candidates: William Ruto and one from the opposition team,” Sifuna stated.
By narrowing the choice, Sifuna believes voters will not have to “strain” to find a credible alternative. He argued that a consolidated ticket would provide a clear, binary choice for Kenyans, preventing the fragmentation that often hands victory to the incumbent.
A Call for Opposition Unity
The Senator’s plan hinges on a massive “sacrifice” from within the opposition ranks. He challenged the various factions within the Azimio and broader opposition umbrella to put aside individual ambitions.
To win, he says, the opposition must front a single, formidable candidate—someone who will not just compete, but be a “thorn in the flesh” for Ruto throughout the campaign cycle.
As the 2027 gears begin to turn, Sifuna’s “two-candidate” ultimatum sets a high bar for opposition diplomacy. Whether the diverse interests within the opposition can truly unite behind one name remains the multi-billion-shilling question.
