NAIROBI, Kenya — A wave of shock and anxiety has swept across the country following the emergence of a viral video showing a convoy of suspected armed goons on motorbikes taking over the streets of Githurai and brazenly discharging firearms into the air.
The alarming footage, which has circulated widely on social media platforms, shows passengers on multiple motorcycles shooting recklessly into the sky as terrified local residents look on.
The lawless display has left members of the public questioning whether the armed individuals were plainclothes police officers or a coordinated gang operating with absolute impunity.

Adding to the public’s outrage, the video appears to capture the armed riders being cleared to pass through official police checkpoints by officers manning local roadblocks.
Calls for Immediate Action
The incident has triggered widespread condemnation from a cross-section of Kenyans and civil society groups, who are now calling on the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, to restore order and crack down on the rising tide of organized hooliganism.
Some alarmed citizens have drawn grim parallels to international crises, warning that Kenya risks sliding into a state of lawlessness akin to Haiti, where armed gangs exert control over public spaces and governance.
“We cannot allow masked individuals to terrorize neighborhoods while official security apparatuses look the other way,” noted an online observer.
The tension comes at a sensitive time, as the government heavily deployed police forces across Nairobi and its environs to contain youth-led protests.
The demonstrations were organized by youth groups to commemorate those who tragically lost their lives during the historic Finance Bill 2024 protests.
At the time of writing, the government of the Republic of Kenya has yet to issue an official statement addressing the identity of the armed motorcyclists or the nature of their operations in Githurai.
