Bungoma Rebellion: Wetang’ula’s Grip Loosens as Youth Declare Sifuna De Facto Kingpin
BUNGOMA, Kenya — National Assembly Speaker Moses Masika Wetang’ula is facing an unprecedented political crisis in his backyard after a trending video exposed a significant shift in Bungoma County’s political alignment during today’s local street protests.
For decades, Wetang’ula has held a firm grip on the voting patterns of Bungoma and Trans Nzoia counties, positioning himself as the undisputed political supremo of the region.
However, that traditional authority was openly defied today as local youth took to the streets, ignoring explicit advice from the Speaker’s camp to abstain from the demonstrations.
The defiance quickly turned symbolic. In a move that has sent shockwaves through the local political elite, protesting youths were seen burning tyres, blocking major highways, and loudly chanting the name of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, declaring him their de facto regional leader.

The unexpected endorsement left leaders allied to Wetang’ula in deep confusion and scrambling for a response.
Political analysts are reading today’s events as a critical turning point ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The ground shift indicates that the youth are looking for an alternative voice to challenge the long-standing status quo.
Sifuna, who originates from the region, is increasingly being viewed by the younger demographic as the progressive alternative to the traditional political order.
With Ford Kenya’s historical dominance being actively tested on its own home turf, local commentators note that Wetang’ula will have to move with speed to recalibrate his strategy.
If the Speaker hopes to maintain his status as the region’s kingpin and neutralize Sifuna’s growing influence, he will have to work significantly harder to win back a restless, younger electorate that is eager to chart its own political path.
