Orengo Outsmarts Security Cordons, Storms Nairobi CBD on Motorbike to Honor Fallen Youths
NAIROBI, Kenya — In a dramatic twist that caught law enforcement off guard, Siaya County Governor James Orengo made a tactical entry into the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD), completely bypassing heavy police blockades set up to deter demonstrators.
Despite a massive deployment of anti-riot police blocking vehicles from accessing the city center in anticipation of widespread demonstrations, the veteran politician and human rights lawyer resorted to an unconventional maneuver.
Footage circulating widely online shows Governor Orengo riding on the back of a commercial motorcycle (boda boda), weaving through the tight security grid.

Supported by his bodyguard who squeezed onto the same bike, Orengo can be seen defiantly waving the Kenyan flag to cheering onlookers before his group was ultimately dispersed by teargas-wielding officers.
Honoring the Gen Z Legacy
Orengo’s daring entry was aimed at joining citizens in commemorating the young Kenyans who lost their lives during the historic anti-government protests.
The action marks a poignant anniversary. The Finance Bill 2024 protests, led predominantly by the young “Gen Z” demographic, initially erupted over punitive tax proposals on basic goods, digital services, and fuel.
What started as peaceful, digitally-mobilized marches quickly escalated when state security responded with force.
Dozens of young protesters were killed, and hundreds more were injured or abducted, triggering massive national outrage that ultimately forced President William Ruto to withdraw the bill.
By breaching the CBD cordons on a motorcycle, Orengo signaled that the push for accountability and the memory of those who died fighting for economic justice will not be easily suppressed.
