NAIROBI, Kenya — Maurice Ogeta, the longtime trusted bodyguard of the late Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga, has broken his silence regarding the final moments of the veteran politician’s life in India, putting an end to months of intense public speculation.
The iconic opposition leader passed away on October 15, 2025, at the age of 80 while undergoing treatment in Kerala, India.
His subsequent multi-day national mourning and rapid state funeral—honoring his final wishes to be laid to rest within 72 hours—left Kenyans deeply devastated and fueled numerous conspiracy theories regarding the exact timeline and location of his demise.

“The Right Honorable Raila Odinga passed away in India, just as the family and state reported,” Ogeta clarified. Describing the tragic moment, the bodyguard revealed that the death was sudden and peaceful. According to Ogeta, the ODM leader was undertaking a routine morning walk when he simply stopped moving, collapsing unexpectedly.
“He did not speak much in those final seconds. It just happened, and that was it,” Ogeta added, confirming that medical teams quickly established he had suffered a fatal cardiac arrest.
Ogeta, who served the “Father of Kenya’s Democracy” for over two decades and stood by him through turbulent political eras, expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity to guard the statesman until his very last breath.
