KAMPALA, Uganda — Uganda’s long-serving President, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, recently delighted a press gathering with a characteristically candid revelation about his personal life, explaining why Ugandans have never seen him display public romance toward the First Lady, Janet Museveni.
Addressing members of the press and the public, the President tackled the long-standing curiosity regarding his strict adherence to privacy. With a blend of humor and cultural pride, Museveni stated that as a traditional African man, public kissing is fundamentally taboo.
The President went on to explain the severe political and spiritual stakes of violating these customs.
He joked that if he were to break tradition and kiss his wife in public, he would alienate the country’s ancestors and alienate conservative voters, effectively guaranteeing he would “never win an election in Uganda” again.

“Exhibitionism of sexual behavior, including public kissing, is forbidden in our culture,” Museveni previously noted regarding traditional values. “If I kissed my wife in public, I would lose elections.”
His witty remarks drew massive laughter and applause from the gathered attendees, who praised the Head of State for his boldness and his unwavering commitment to safeguarding indigenous African traditions.
For a leader who has guided the East African nation since 1986, the moment served as a lighthearted yet firm reminder of his governance style, which frequently fuses contemporary politics with deeply entrenched cultural norms.
The viral moment has since sparked widespread conversation online, with many praising the President’s ability to defend African social structures with humor, proving once again that even after decades in power, he still knows exactly how to connect with the cultural heartbeat of his electorate.
