Slip of the Tongue: DP Kithure Kindiki Leaves Kenyans Talking After Confusing Ruto with Uhuru in Mt. Kenya Speech
NAIROBI, KENYA — Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has sparked lively discussions across social media following a major slip of the tongue during a public address in the Mt. Kenya region.
Speaking to a crowd while flanked by several Kenya Kwanza-allied political leaders, DP Kindiki was passionately rallying local residents to support the administration’s development agenda and secure backing for the President’s reelection bid.
However, mid-speech, the Deputy President mistakenly substituted former Head of State Uhuru Kenyatta’s name for current President William Ruto. While engaging the crowd on what feedback he should deliver to the Head of State upon his return to Nairobi, Kindiki repeatedly referenced retired President Uhuru Kenyatta instead of his boss.

“When I head back to Nairobi, what message should I deliver to President Uhuru about your support?” Kindiki asked the crowd before realizing the mix-up moments later.
Realizing his error, the Deputy President quickly corrected himself, continuing his pitch to consolidate support for President William Ruto ahead of the next general election.
Despite the quick recovery, the blunder did not go unnoticed. The crowd briefly erupted into murmurs and laughter, while political allies standing nearby appeared visibly caught off-guard.
Video clips of the incident rapidly circulated across TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), and Facebook, garnering widespread reactions.
While some social media users laughed off the moment as an innocent, human slip of the tongue, political commentators noted the irony given the long-standing political rift between the Kenya Kwanza administration and former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The Deputy President has since continued his political tour across the central region as Kenya Kwanza leaders push to keep the Mt. Kenya voting bloc united.
