Gachagua Signals Support for Sifuna, Calling Nairobi Senator a Political “Tsunami”
NAIROBI, Kenya — Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has praised Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, acknowledging him as a rising political force and expressing a willingness to support him if selected to lead the opposition coalition.
Speaking during a joint interview with radio stations in Meru and Tharaka Nithi, the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader described Sifuna’s rapid national rise as a “tsunami” reshaping Kenya’s political landscape.
Gachagua highlighted Sifuna’s ability to mobilize public support through his Linda Mwananchi movement, noting that the senator has evolved from a regional politician into a influential leader with a broad base.
“Sifuna and his team represent a powerful wave across the country,” Gachagua stated during the broadcast. “If the united opposition settles on Edwin Sifuna as our presidential candidate, I will back him fully. He has proven his mettle on the ground.”

Gachagua emphasized that the primary goal of opposition factions is to present a single, united ticket against the current administration. He noted that while several figures within the opposition hold presidential ambitions, consolidating behind a candidate with strong grassroots momentum—such as Sifuna—is key to securing victory.
The comments mark a shift in opposition dynamics as political groups explore strategic alliances. Sifuna, who serves as the Secretary-General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and leads the Linda Mwananchi initiative, has increasingly signaled interest in higher office.
Gachagua reaffirmed his commitment to mentoring younger politicians, adding that aligning with popular sentiment remains the opposition’s clearest path forward.
